This truly spectacular palm from the Molucca Islands. This palm must be container grown except for zones 10a – 11. Depending upon form, Areca vestiaria can be solitary (single-trunked) or clumping. We offer the clumping form because we feel that this specimen has greater aesthetic appeal. The trunks are bright red to crimson in color with glossy green fronds. The seeds hang in clusters and are bright yellow and the contrast between the seed color and trunk is unparalleled among palms. It can reach a height of more than 12 feet, but takes many years to do so. Whether growing in containers or in the ground, it should be kept in full shade, or with very little morning sun. It is naturally an understory rainforest palm and like damp areas. The palm will not survive if it is allowed to dry. Greenhouses are a great location for this plant and will do very well especially if mist is provided. It can handle outside temperatures down to the mid-30’s F. Areca vestiaria is an absolute must for the collector of rare palms. |
