Florida Hass is believed to have come either from a seedling of the Hass from Mexico (grown commercially in California), or from a grafted tree of Hass that was brought to Florida in 1960 and planted in the Ft. Myers area. While Hass from Mexico doesn't like the humid climate of Florida, this particular tree produced fruits just like Hass and thrives in Florida. The tree will grow to 25 feet in about 15 years and does not need a pollinator. Florida Hass has exceptional oil content, nearing 20%, which is the reason for its creamy texture and rich flavor. There is some question as to the quality of Florida Hass vs. the Hass commercially grown in California. Hass from Florida has a slightly lower fat content, due to the difference in soil, but we find very little flavor difference if any. Our most prized Avocado, we have very limited quantities, but this one is a favorite at Jene's Tropicals. (Hass is the Avocado found in grocery stores.) (Photo from:http://www.hort.purdue.edu) |
