The Hua Moa originated in Tahiti, made its way to Hawai'i and then traveled to the US mainland during the 1960's. Hua moa is an unusual Plantain because of it short, fat, fruits. The fruits measure 3-5 inches in diameter and 5-8 inches in length. They are very sweet when ripe and can be cooked for desserts. They can also be eaten green when cooked. The plant height is 14-16 feet and as with all banana and plantain, they love lots of water and lots of fertilizer. Citrus 4-6-8 is best and they prefer heavy applications, monthly, during the spring and summer. Rich, well-drained, soil is best. A definite for anyone who loves plantains. |
