Longan is one of the most highly prized sub-tropical fruits of Asia. It sweet pulp resembles that of a grape with one seed in the middle. The fruits hang from their trees in great numbers, sometimes producing more than 200 fruits in one cluster. Fruits of the variety Kohala (from western Hawaii) are brown when ripe, extremely sweet and generally grow to 1.25 inches in diameter. This fruit a close relative of the Lychee and for those who have tasted its delicious fruits, one would have a general understanding of the texture of the Longan, though the Longan is a bit firmer and the flavor is different. It has long been said that the Longan is a great thirst quencher. Longans are very easy to grow and generally have very high disease and insect resistance. The tree is stately, with dark, glossy evergreen leaves. Insignificant flowers form in spring and fruits are rip by mid-August. Longan is slow growing reaching 20 feet in about 18 years and can grow to 25 30 feet ultimately. They are not tropical and can tolerate very brief temperatures (once per year) to 24 F degrees though it is advisable to protect them when they are very young. All of our Longans are grown from Air-layers. (Grafting is not needed or recommended for this fruit.) |
