Natal Plum is both a fragrant ornamental flowering year ‘round and a plant that produces delicious edible fruits. Very popular until the 1970’s as a small, slow-growing hedge in California, Texas, Florida and coastal areas of the Gulf of Mexico it has regained its popularity in the horticulture world in the past 5 years. The plant will grow to six feet in about 15 – 20 years and has beautiful white flowers (about 1” in diameter and star shaped) that smell just like Jasmine and Gardenia. Natal Plum has small thorns and rich, dark glossy green leaves. As an edible plant, the fruits typically are produced throughout the year, most ripening from May through September. Fruits turn a dark purple when rip and can be eaten fresh or made into jams and jellies. Hardy to 25 F degrees. |
