Persian Lime - 3 Gallon - GRAFTED
 Description
Also known as Tahitian Lime, Persian is thought to be a hybrid lime as it is not found growing wild anywhere in the world. The parent tree is thought to have arisen as a chance cross between a lime and citron. There is little information about the origin. In 1883 a Mr. Rooks noted that Tahiti Lime was growing in Florida and so was the Persian Lime. He thought they were to distinctly different cultivars. Through genetic testing we know them, now, to be the same fruit. There is no explanation as to why it was ever called Persian. A seedling selection of the Tahiti is often called "Bearss Lime" in California. All three are actually the same cultivar. Since 1930, Tahiti has led the Lime industry in Florida. Most are grown in south and south-central Florida as they are not cold tolerant. They are much better suited as potted plants in cooler climates, and taken indoors to weather winter temperatures. Hurricane Andrew, in 1992, destroyed much of the lime crop in Florida, though it is now recovering. Persian limes will grow to about 15 feet. They are one of the most beautiful citrus trees with very dark green leaves. They fruit are 2 1/2 inch in length and have from 8-15 seeds per fruit. This cultivar of lime can be found in every grocery store in the United States. It is very popular. A definate for anyone who likes limes.
