The lumpy, heart shaped Sugar Apple is a favorite throughout the tropics. This small growing deciduous tree produces an abundance of creamy pulped, sherbet flavored fruit. The Sugar Apple is delicious eaten fresh. Pick fruit just before maturity and let it sit for a day. When it is soft, break it open, scoop the pulp out with a spoon and enjoy. Fruits are green outside and white to cream colored inside. The Kampong Mauve variety are grafted and have a reddish outside and pink flesh. Both are very delicious! The Sugar Apple bears within 2 years. (Image borrowed from http://www.geocities.com) |
